WORKSHOP PRO HILLEL KOGAN
28th January from 15h to 18h, Studio Noces at Micadanses
BIO
Contemporary choreographer Hillel Kogan works at the crossroads of dance and performance. His pieces combine movement, text and music into a multilayered performative language that navigates itself between commentary and critics on the world of dance, popular culture and contemporary society, under the layer of entertaining virtuosity. Kogan’s interest in uncovering the ideological within the aesthetic, acknowledging political hierarchies that eventually dominate dance, and culture over all. His works expose dance as a locus for constructing meaning and establishing norms, within which the dancing body – always in conflict with itself and the society- raises to reflect on what is considered proper, beautiful, sacred or cool. This form of danced-discourse that Kogan has developed embodies his self-reflexive position, seeking the exploration of identifiable artistic codes, visual images or theatrical conventions as a channel for critical contemplation on the craft of the artist, and the complex relationship between performance and spectator.
Kogan has collaborated with companies in Israel and around the world. He danced in the Batsheva ensemble, and in Ballet Gulbenkian in Portugal, and in various projects of independent international choreographers, as well as guest dancer in Batsheva Dance company. He creates for dance festivals as well as for Opera and musicals. He created pieces for Batsheva Ensemble (2024), for Ballet du Capitole in Toulouse (2018) and more. His pieces “We Love Arabs” (2013), “The Swan and the Pimp” (2017) and “THISISPAIN” (2023) performed in numerous festivals and venues in France and all over the world.
WORKSHOP
My creative workshops invite dancers and body performers to observe dance and the body through the perspective of cultural studies. The workshop offers to experience some performative tools that I often use in my creation process for dealing with cultural questions, in particular the question of identity, through body and choreography, and in the artist’s endless conflict with his artistic environment, with the society in which he lives, and with himself.
